First year lifeguards will be required to pass the full American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course which is approximately 32 hours.
- GHPMI offers discounts to GHPMI employees for this training.
- Participants receive a Lifeguard Traning book and a pocket mask (rescusitation mask) at the class.

- You can take the class somewhere other than GHPMI, but make sure you get all the correct American Red Cross certificates. Copies of the front and back of the certificates must be turned into the office by March 31, 2010.
LIFEGUARD TRAINING COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
- Be 15 years old by the last day of class
- Able to complete the American Red Cross prerequisite swim test before you can begin the course. The swim test will be given on the first day of class. The prerequisite swim test includes:
- Swim 300 yards continuously in this order:
- 100 yards of front crawl with rhythmic breathing (face in the water and turning or lifting head for a breath).
- 100 yards of breaststroke.
- 100 yards of either front crawl or breaststroke.
- Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet and retrieve a 10-pound object, return to surface, and swim 20 yards on your back, return to the starting point while holding the brick with two hands within 1 minute and 40 seconds. Time stops when you place the brick on deck and exit the water without using a ladder or stairs.
- Complete and pass an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course.
Participants are required to attend ALL dates and times of the scheduled course. Do not register for a separate CPR/AED class.
After passing the entire Lifeguard Training course, you will be certified in the following:
- Lifeguard Training and First Aid (3 year certification)
- CPR/AED for Lifeguards (1 year certification)
- Bloodborne Pathogen Training (BBP) (1 year certification)
