Frequently Asked Questions

What is my next step?

  1. Fill out an application on-line and submit.
  2. Once the application has been submitted, a member of the Human Resource Department will contact you to schedule an interview.
  3. Once hired, you will be given paperwork to fill out to finish your hiring process.
  4. You will be required to register for your lifeguard training class and complete the online company orientation training in the Employee section of the website.

Can I choose my pool?

Yes, you can choose your pool. However, please remember three company policies regarding pool location:

  1. Returning lifeguards have first choice of pools.
  2. When a pool is fully staffed you must choose another location.
  3. Pool requests are on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Can I work at my neighborhood pool?

This depends upon what restrictions your homeowners association has regarding residents working at the pool. Some allow residents to lifeguard, while others do not.

What are the requirements for a lifeguard training class and what all does it include?

  1. In order to become a lifeguard, you must be 15 years old by the last day of class
  2. You must be able to complete the American Red Cross prerequisite swim test before you can begin the course. The test will be given on the first day of class. The prerequisite swim test includes:
    • Swim 300 yards continuously in this order:
      • 100 yards of front crawl with rhythmic breathing.
      • 100 yards of breaststroke.
      • 100 yards of either front crawl or breaststroke.
    • Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet and retrieve a 10-pound object, return to surface, and swim 20 yards back to the starting point. This event is timed.
  3. You must complete and pass an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course.

The course training includes: Lifeguarding, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, Automated External Defibrillation (AED), and Preventing Disease Transmission (PDT).

How much is the certification class?

Price varies depending on time of year. It is important to try and sign up for the earlier classes; however, classes are held through the end of July. Please visit the Employee News section of the website for a listing of class dates, times, and pricing.

Am I required to pay for all trainings?

The only training that has a required payment is the certification training. All other trainings are not paid for by the employee.

Do you provide payment plans for certification classes?

Normally, payment plans are not provided. We require payment prior to the first day of class. If you have a special circumstance where you would like to discuss a payment plan, please e-mail the Human Resource Department. We will look at this on a case by case basis. Certification cards will not be provided until entire payment has been received.

Can I come on non-scheduled uniform pick up days to purchase a uniform?

GHPM has scheduled uniform pick-up days. On these dates, uniforms are available to try on. If you cannot pick up your uniform on the dates requested, you will need to contact the Human Resource Department. Uniforms will not be available to try on, so please make sure you know what size you are going to need.

What forms of payment do you accept?

GHPM accepts cash, moneyorders, and checks. Credit card payments are only accepted online through paypal. Please have checks and moneyorders made out to Greater Houston Pool Management or GHPM.

What is the Company Orientation and when I do need to attend?

The Company Orientation is a mandatory online training that must be completed before you can begin working.
